A bright ball of white light, about twice as bright as Jupiter, travelling low across the sky, horizontally above the horizon, approximately SE to NW. I was near the village of Elton, Derbyshire, walking up a dark lane.
I observed the phenomenon for a little less than a minute, thinking at first it might be plane or helicopter flying low with headlights, or maybe a guy Fawkes rocket or Chinese lantern.
It moved steadily and completely soundlessly at about the speed that a plane a few miles away might seem to move, crossing about a third of the horizon in about 45 seconds.
After about 20 seconds, and as it apparently approached and passed me, I saw it appear to extend a streak of a tail, this lengthened as it moved away to the NW, now a diminishing ball of light at its head, with small spark-like clusters of more orange light in the long, straight streak of the tail.
What was remarkable and distinguished the phenomenon from a fireworks rocket was that the trail of light and sparks it left continued at almost exactly the same speed and in the same trajectory behind it.
They did not appear to fall to earth. Slowly everything faded into the NW horizon.
There was never any turbulence or sound, everything seemed to float across the sky. I concluded that it might be an asteroid entering the Earth's atmosphere at its very outer edges, and burning.
The whole show resembled that of a shooting star but bigger, in slow motion, with a much longer tail, horizontally, and for almost a minute.
Reaching the pub I was walking to I encountered two people who, driving, had pulled over and stopped, to watch, one from nearby Wensley, another closer to Ashbourne some 10 miles away. Both described essentially the same sight.
If you have seen anything like this in the same area please be kind enough to contact Brian Vike at: sighting@telus.net with the details of your sighting. All personal information is kept confidential.
Also, please feel free to send in your sightings that have happened years ago. So many of these older sightings are nothing short of amazing.

I saw exactly the same thing as you described. Bright ball of light with sparks at the front and long tail of light trailing behind. I thought it was a firework at first but it lasted far too long. As it past over towards the horizon and I saw the back of it i could see it was actually 4 balls of light headed in the same directions and disappeared Into to the horizon. I've never seen anything like this before, very strange. I was on my way to work close to derby's city centre when I spotted it through the clouds as it dropped below them at 10.55 pm.
