Evening, I live in Santa Clara, CA at the same time you posted, 12:03 a.m. my girlfriend and I were out having a smoke listening to fireworks and I looked roughly south-south-west and noticed two, then three bright red objects moving in a slow upward motion, then another two emerged from the horizon.
We counted five total. The movement was like watching a jet slowly gain altitude and vector off, only these didn't do anything of the sort. They all flew in the same pattern and faded as the went.
Normally, given I live by San Jose Intl airport, I get a lot of air traffic, this was not in the normal pattern of airspace I see traffic in, and there were no transponder lights like you would see on aircraft, the were bright red like a signal flare.
But again, they didn't behave like that either, neither of us believed those to be normal aircraft and too coincidental that it happened moments after New Years celebrations on the west coast.
